An Australian Perspective on the Application of Infrared Thermography to the Inspectionof Military Aircraft

چکیده
This paper provides a summary of the Australian experience with infrared thermography as a nondestructive inspection (NDI) tool for through-life support of aircraft within the Australian Defence Force (ADF). It covers the key variants of active thermography including flash, synchronous (or lock-in), and sonic as well as thermoelastic stress analysis and presents a range of applications to military aircraft including the F/A-18, F-111, and the MRH-90. This work, done by the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation over a period of a decade, has helped to clarify some of the key challenges confronting the introduction of infrared thermography as a routine method of inspection within the ADF. It is argued that the importance of infrared thermography is set to grow with the emergence of aircraft like the Tiger and MRH-90 which are assembled from light-weight composite materials that are amenable to thermal forms of inspection.

Experimental Detection of Composite Delamination Damage based on Ultrasonic Infrared Thermography
An experimental setup is designed to detect composite delamination damage based on ultrasonic infrared thermography. The ultrasonic infrared thermography system is composed by ultrasonic excitation system, infrared thermal imager and data acquisition system and two damaged composite plate specimens are produced in the experiment. The image processing methods including thresholding, filters, edg...
متن کاملDevelopment of a New NDT Method Using Thermography for Composite Inspection on Aircraft with Portable Military Thermal Imager
TNDT (Thermal Non Destructive Testing) is now an emerging method that comes out of laboratory since a few years. It is here proposed to investigate, compare and quantify the different possibilities to use thermography in stead of radiography or ultrasonic testing on composite parts in maintenance of aircrafts. The new idea is to use military thermal imagers because the detector is now a very se...

Composite materials are often more practical in use for different military applications. These materials provide interesting results especially through their good strength properties, corrosion resistance and low specific weight. These materials have various structures. Any defect of these materials usually has a more complicated and other form than in metals and that is why methods and diagnos...
متن کاملDevelopment of a NDT method using thermography for composite material inspection on aircraft using military thermal imager
This paper describes the methodology used to introduce thermography as new inspection method for composite parts in aircraft maintenance. It is here focused on two main topics : control of leading edge flaps of Belgian F16 (mainly due to ageing aircraft) and inspection of main and tail rotor blades of Belgian A109 Agusta helicopters. The new idea is to use typical military thermal imagers initi...

In the present paper, an efficient method for three dimensional aircraft pattern recognition is introduced. In this method, a set of simple area based features extracted from silhouette of aerial vehicles are used to recognize an aircraft type from its optical or infrared images taken by a CCD camera or a FLIR sensor. These images can be taken from any direction and distance relative to the fly...
